Civil War Minutes: Part IV Summary
Civil War Minutes: Part IV (Full Frame)
Civil War Minutes: Part IV Full Description
Starring Civil War historian Michael Kraus, the Military Coordinator for the film "Gettysburg" and the Northern Commander of many of the 125th Anniversary reenactments. Experience the Civil War in several 4-8 minute segments featuring never before seen photographs, artifacts and hundreds of rare paintings and engravings. See a rare sword that belonged to a major in the Civil War. Learn about the lives of the soldiers through their handwritten letters home and find out what life was like from the perspective of the average foot soldier. "Civil War Caps" In this episode, the signature piece of headgear of the Civil War Era, the Forage Cap, is examined. This cap was the standard for enlisted men, although many officers wore it as well. Captain Kraus demonstrates the different ways a soldier could wear this cap. "Letters from Red River" In these two letters, Andrew Crawford described to his father the horrors he encountered while his regiment was being transported down the Red River to Alexandria, Louisiana. Crawford was onboard two transports that were both ambushed within days of each other by Confederates. "George Lemon's Sword" This episode examines the sword of Union Major George F. Lemon. Lemon was mortally wounded in the leg at the battle of Crampton's Gap in Burkittsville, Maryland. "Corps Badges" The episode looks at the badges that were used to signify a soldier's Corps and Division. The first official use of corps badges came from the Army of the Potomac in April 1863. Soldiers quickly identified with these unique symbols and they were still seen many years after the war on monuments or at reunions. "Poem from Joseph Slemmons" In a letter written in October, 1862, to his mother, Joseph H. Slemmons included a poem, which described life at war. He described long nights on guard duty, the fierceness of battle and the unfortunate soldiers who would never again answer the call to arms.
