Experience the Civil War in several 4-8 minute segments featuring never before seen photographs, artifacts and hundreds of rare paintings and engravings. See a letter about the brutal death of Lt. Richard Craven at the Battle of the Crater. Learn about the lives of the soldiers through their handwritten letters home and find out what life was like from the perspective of the average foot soldier. "Death of Richard Craven" Captain John W. Morrison wrote this personal account of the death of his friend, Lieutenant Richard Craven. Craven was killed at the Battle of the Crater near Petersburg, Virginia in 1864. "The Federal Backpack" A standard Federal backpack was sometimes called a "hotel" or "bureau," because it contained the living accommodations of an everyday soldier. Captain Kraus demonstrates the way the backpack was loaded and worn. "Seven Days with Battery B" In a letter written on July 4, 1862, Sergeant John Fullerton described the fighting that took place during the Seven Days' Battles and the physical exhaustion felt by the men in his battery. "Premonition of Death" In a letter written on September 6, 1862, Joseph W. Hennon stated that he has witnessed the deaths of several of his fellow soldiers and believed that he would be the next to fall. Eight days after writing this letter, Hennon was mortally wounded at the battle of South Mountain. "Carte-De-Visite Photography" This episode looks at mid 19th century photography with emphasis on the most popular form of photography, the carte-de-visite. French for "visiting cards," these pictures were collected in a variety of personalized albums. "J.C. Barton in Virginia, 1861" In a letter written on September 10, 1861, J.C.
